The chronology of the Mercosur agreement Since the market began to become global in the 20th century, countries around the world began to notice the need to align objectives and productive demands to gain strength in negotiation and industrial development across the planet. In this sense, the last 100 years have been marked by this rapprochement between governments and the private sector that reduces barriers between borders. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) are some examples of economic and political agreements that dominated market dynamics in the period. As a result of this movement, it was natural to create an international bloc that would do the same for the countries of the Southern Cone of America. The Common Market of the South, known as Mercosur, was signed in to more practically integrate the economies of most countries in the subcontinent, led by Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. This movement proved to be very important for the commercial development of the entire bloc, which now has free trade and movement of citizens across borders and greater coordination for joint negotiation in the market. It is exactly this power that can and should be explored by maritime transport logistics to create even more business opportunities within Brazil.

The importance of the Mercosur agreement for number database  the Brazilian port/maritime sector Brazil, as the largest country in the bloc, has played a leading and leading role since the creation of Mercosur. It is, among its members, not only the largest GDP, but also the one that invests the most in logistics and international trade, including maritime chartering . After all, as Rene himself comments, the port is the main entry and exit point for a nation's wealth. It is an essential route for anyone who wants to invest in international trade. And this is an interesting point to analyze when talking about Mercosur. Many businesspeople and professionals who deal with sales to other countries immediately associate sea transport with long distances. However, the modal can be much more interesting than others in creating commercial links with our neighbors. This is the case of cabotage: a transport model in which the ship always transits close to the coast, offering local charter routes that can be more efficient than highways. “Brazil has a coastline of more than 8,600 km and approximately 20 ports prepared to receive and ship products abroad”, comments Rene.

The ports of Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife have experienced the exchange of goods via sea for their more distant locations, and the market is growing.” With this ever-growing port infrastructure network, it is possible not only to expand your market to neighbors but also to participate in joint negotiations to have more negotiating power on the global stage. And this has actually been happening with some changes and adjustments in relations between neighbors. Wlach gives us an example of this: “In the past there were some bilateral agreements between Brazil-Chile, Brazil-Uruguay and Brazil-Argentina (where only ships with flags from these countries could operate on the route). However, changes to the treaties have already been announced and flags from other countries will also be allowed to participate in this market.” According to him, competition should result in a reduction in freight rates and an increase in trade volumes involved. What are the trends for the future development of the agreement With this movement, the future of Mercosur begins to indicate an even more important participation of shipping by ships, not only in the exchange of goods within the bloc but also in the strength of these economies together for international trade.
